Our Mission

The mission of Real Alternatives is to provide life-affirming alternative to abortion services to assist women faced with crisis pregnancies. We accomplish this Mission by:

• Administering a statewide government-funded alternative to abortion services program that funds pro-life social service agencies, pregnancy support centers, maternity homes, and adoption agencies that provide counseling and material assistance; and,
• Educating other pro-life organizations throughout the country about government funded alternative to abortion services programs.

By accomplishing this Mission, we seek to ensure that women facing crisis pregnancies:

• receive support,
• achieve improved reproductive health,
• develop improved parenting skills,
• receive adoption education,

all of which will empower them to choose childbirth rather than abortion.

Real Alternatives is the non-profit, charitable organization that  administers the Pennsylvania Alternative to Abortion Services Program for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is funded by the General Assembly of Pennsylvania at $6.5 million a year through the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania Alternative to Abortion Services Program is made up of a statewide network of social service agencies,  pregnancy support centers, maternity residences and adoption agencies that offer comprehensive, life-affirming alternatives to abortion to women dealing with unplanned pregnancies.

Our 121 centers, located throughout Pennsylvania, are staffed with caring professionals and trained counselors. These centers are non-discriminatory, non-profit organizations that are monitored annually to ensure compliance with the Department of Public Welfare standards.

Serving more than 135,000 women throughout Pennsylvania since the program began in March 1996, the centers offer free and confidential support, encouragement, guidance and practical assistance to women so they do not need to choose abortion.

We provide:

• Confidential counseling and mentoring
• Non-judgmental atmosphere of understanding and support
• Free pregnancy self-test kits
• Clothing, food and furniture pantries
• Temporary shelter
• Pregnancy, childbirth and parenting classes
• Referrals to other community agencies and medical resources
• Abstinence education to modify risky lifestyle behavior
• Adoption information
• Assistance with education and career decisions
• Other related services necessary for the well-being of the mother and child

• Real Alternatives has been awarded the Seal of Excellence for successfully completing the Standards of Excellence certification program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO).
